Young Momo moves from bustling Tokyo to the remote Japanese island of Shio with her mother, clutching an unfinished letter written by her recently deceased father. Upon their arrival, she begins to explore her new surroundings, meeting local children and learning their routines and customs. However, it isn't long before strange occurrences begin to occur around the previously tranquil island. Orchards are being ransacked, prized trinkets are disappearing, and, worst of all, Momo hears strange mumblings coming from their home's attic every morning after her mother leaves for work. Momo, irritated by these strange occurrences and her mother's refusal to believe them, embarks on a strange and supernatural journey to find the source of the mischief, which leads her to a trio of troublesome imps: the flatulent lizard Kawa, the childlike Mame, and their hulking ogre leader Iwa. Momo also discovers that her visit to the island is linked to her father's mysterious letter.
