Vivian Miller (Young) is a young lady in her twenties who is carrying out her prison sentence at a work release program in the Midwest when the film begins. For her 90-day probationary period, she is assigned to The Cawdor Theater, a decaying summer stock theater owned and operated by Lawrence O'Neil (Elwes). Lawrence, a failed Broadway director, is now relegated to creating amateur performances with young parolees and wailing over the mistakes of his past. With the arrival of Vivian in Cawdor comes the beginning of a horrific chain of events that pulls Lawrence's secret past into the light of day for the first time. A force of evil is released after Vivian watches a videotape of an ancient stage play of Macbeth, and it quickly turns its attention toward her. Vivian enlists the assistance of Roddy (Welch), a local pariah, in her quest to learn who the otherworldly killer on the recording is before she becomes the next victim of his vengeance.
