Two Singaporean girls band together to form the Papaya Sisters, a getai ensemble that performs at events held during the seventh lunar month of the Chinese calendar. In the story, Big Papaya has been estranged from her mother, who is disapproving of her performances, and Little Papaya, an orphan who is suffering from terminal cancer, is introduced. Auntie Ling and her son, Guan Yin, lend a helping hand to the two of them. The two quickly soar to the top of Singapore's getai scene, singing traditional Hokkien melodies. However, their success earns them the animosity of the Durian Sisters, a competing group of Eurasian ladies who sing techno music.
