Ren & Stimpy is an American animated television series created by Canadian animator John Kricfalusi, better known as Ren & Stimpy. The show debuted with Rugrats and Doug on Nickelodeon on August 11, 1991, as part of the Nicktoons block. Characters Ren Höek and Stimpson J. Cat are the focus of the show's plot, which revolves around their mental instability and naivete. The network aired the show for five seasons. Cult status and critical acclaim were both gained during and after the show's existence, and some critics credit it with helping pave the way for other parodic animated series like Beavis and Butthead and South Park. Ren and Stimpy were notorious for their sexual innuendos and violence, which led to numerous complaints from Nickelodeon about their standards and practices department during the course of their career. Ren & Stimpy's "Adult Party Cartoon," a spin-off aimed towards older viewers, premiered in 2003 on Spike but was quickly canceled.
