In1980, the U.S. government prohibited new human habitation in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska, a protected area that is home to thousands of native wildlife and about the size of South Carolina in pristine terrain. Currently, just a handful of families occupying seven cottages are permitted to reside in the sanctuary. Within less than one hundred years, all remaining permissions will expire, and there will be no human presence.
