Louisa Durrell, a financially constrained widow whose life has gone apart, makes the decision in 1935 to migrate from England to the island of Corfu, Greece, with her four children, consisting of three sons and one daughter. This migration takes place in 1935. When they finally arrive, the family moves into an old, run-down house that is both without electricity and in the process of falling apart. But life on Corfu is inexpensive, and it is a paradise on earth. The Durrells proceed to construct their new lives, with all of its obstacles, adventures, and the process of developing relationships with other people.
