The Dating Game is an ABC television show that premiered on December 20, 1965, and was the first of many that Chuck Barris devised and packaged during the 1960s and 1980s. The show was canceled by ABC on July 6, 1973, but it was resurrected in syndication as The New Dating Game for another year. The show was resurrected three times: in 1978–1980, 1986–1989, and 1996–1999. It was virtually usually broadcast in tandem with another Barris creation, The Newlywed Game, which debuted on ABC the following year. The show paved the way for a slew of copycat series with similar themes.
