MTV began airing the reality television series titled "The City" on December 29, 2008, and continued to do so until July 13, 2010. The series, which was created as a spin-off of The Hills and ran for two seasons, centered on the personal and professional lives of a number of young women who resided in New York City, New York, and was broadcast on television. Adam DiVello was the one who came up with the notion for it, but Liz Gateley was the one who functioned as the executive producer. Initially, the series centered on Whitney Port, who had participated in the show's predecessor, during the time when she was beginning her career with Diane von Furstenberg. In addition, it focused on her competitor at work, Olivia Palermo, as well as Port's boyfriend, Jay Lyon, his roommate, Adam Senn, and her friend, Erin Lucas. In the second half of the first season, Port's roommate Roxy Olin and Palermo's adversary Erin Kaplan took over for the previously mentioned three characters. The City was not as well regarded by critics on the whole and did not achieve the same level of commercial success as The Hills. In the same vein as its forerunner, this series was frequently criticized for adopting a narrative structure that is more typically seen in scripted genres such as soap operas, and for appearing to fake a significant portion of its tale.
