The Avengers is a long-running television series that originated in the United Kingdom in the 1960s. At first, the Avengers concentrated their efforts on Dr. David Keel and his assistant John Steed. After the first season, Hendry left the show, and Steed went on to become the primary character, who worked with a number of different aides. Cathy Gale, Emma Peel, and later Tara King were Steed's most famous aides. These ladies were known for being brilliant, fashionable, and forceful. In later episodes, science fiction and fantasy, as well as parody and British eccentricity, were used more and more frequently as plot components.
