For the Ten Network in 1981, Reg Grundy Organization developed Punishment, an Australian soap opera. It was set in a men's prison in an attempt to replicate the popular soap opera Prisoner in a more macho setting. Punishment's producers tried to differentiate the show from Prisoner by adding more reality, but the formula failed to draw large audiences. After only three episodes, Network Ten declared the new series a failure and promptly removed it off the schedule. Later that year, the remaining 26 episodes of the series were aired outside of the ratings. For the first time in a soap opera, the series was filmed utilizing a single camera. Many renowned Australian actors, including Brian Wenzel, Barry Crocker, Michael Preston, Ross Thompson, Anne Haddy, George Spartels, Cornelia Frances, Lisa Peers, and Julie McGregor, were part of the regular cast of the show. In the first episode, Mel Gibson portrayed a prisoner who was incarcerated. Kris McQuade, who had been Gibson's on-screen love interest, was dropped from the show after the first few episodes when the actor left. Director and producer Alan Coleman worked on the project.
