Although it was scripted, some viewers took the show more seriously because of Dan Aykroyd's appearances at the beginning and close of each episode and his emphasis on the credibility of the organization the show was based on. When the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry, then known as CSI, awarded Aykroyd a "Snuffed Candle" award in 1997 because of "contributing to the public's lack of awareness of the techniques of scientific inquiry," this was a significant factor.
