Eiichi Shimizu and Tomohiro Shimoguchi developed the Japanese manga series Linebarrels of Iron. In2005, the series was first serialized in Akita Shoten's monthly shnen manga magazine, Champion Red. As of November 20, 2008, it has been compiled into eleven tankbon. The plot revolves around Kouichi Hayase, a fourteen-year-old kid who leads a boring existence until an accident transforms him into the pilot of a massive robot called "Linebarrel" and leads him to meet a mystery girl. An anime adaptation of the manga series was announced in the February issue of Animage magazine. Masamitsu Hidaka directed the anime, and Gonzo animated it. Though the first episode had its world premiere at the 2008 Anime Expo in Southern California, the series premiered in Japan on the television network TBS on October3, 2008. The anime ran a total of twenty-four episodes, the last of which aired on March20, 2009. To mark the series' anime adaptation, Shimizu and Shimoguchi decided to make a one-shot manga reproducing the whole first episode of the anime, with the plot differing in many ways from the beginning of the manga.
