Stepbrothers Kohtaro Minami and Nobuhiko Akizuki underwent cyborg surgery in order to become candidates for the next Gorgom Creation King after being kidnapped by the cult Gorgom on the night of their 19th birthdays. They are both known as Century Kings and are destined to face off in a final fight; the victor will become the next Creation King. With the aid of his foster father, Kohtaro fled before receiving brainwashing (the final part of the surgery) and turned against Gorgom. Soon thereafter, he learns from his stepfather the horrifying truth: Gorgom murdered his real parents and, because both Kohtaro and Nobuhiko were born on the day of a solar eclipse, they were nicknamed "Black Sun" and "Shadow Moon." Kohtaro, assuming the identity of Kamen Rider Black, was intent on rescuing his stepsibling from Gorgom while defending Japan. Later in the series, however, Nobuhiko emerged as Shadow Moon to battle Kohtaro, with the victor becoming the subsequent Creation King.
