At the close of the 1950s, in a more innocent America, the terrible murder of a Midwestern family appalled the nation. This film is based on Truman Capote's eerie nonfiction book. Dick Hickock, 20, hears a cellmate's claim of $10,000 in cash hidden by a rancher. Dick, a 20-year-old parolee, convinces ex-con Perry Smith to help him find the cache. Dick and Perry break into Herb Clutter's Holcomb, Kansas, home in 1959. Enraged at finding no safe haven, they slaughter a sleeping family. Two buddies find the bodies before church. The murders shock the unlocked town on the Great Plains. Detective Alvin Dewey of the Kansas Bureau of Investigation leads the case, although he has no clues, motivation, or suspects.
