In order to repair what was lost, the brothers search a war-torn region for the Philosopher's Stone, a legendary relic that offers the power to perform alchemy in inconceivable ways. The corrupt State Military is also keen to capture the power of the relic, joining the Elrics in their pursuit. Likewise, the Homunculi and their unknown creator are both peculiar. The legendary stone entices alchemists from distant nations, scarring some of them severely enough to urge murder. The Elrics' objective remains intact, and their relationship is unshakable, even as their trajectory is altered by foes and allies.
