Disco was a popular German pop music show that aired from 1971 to 1982 on the ZDF network. It was broadcast at 7:30 PM on the first Saturday of every month, with a show lasting 45 minutes in length on average. There were 133 shows made. Ilja Richter, a German actor and comedian, served as the show's emcee. Ilja Richter and Suzanne Doucet were among the presenters of the ZDF's 4-3-2-1 Hot & Sweet between 1966 and 1970. Disco's primary rivals were Beat-Club and Musikladen, both on ARD, until1972, when ZDF's Hitparade dominated the market. Since1984, ZDF Musikkanal has played reruns of Disco, following its demise on 3sat in 1989. Reruns of the complete series have been broadcast on the digital ZDF Theaterkanal from 2004. ZDF Dokukanal began airing reruns in2007, beginning with episodes from1975, while hit24 aired numerous replays of the show in 2008. The broadcast focused on current chart toppers, offering international pop music and German Schlager almost equal play. However, despite its name, it didn't focus on disco music as much as it did on other chart-topping songs.
