Candy Candy is a Japanese novel, manga, and anime series. Candice "Candy" White Ardlay, the main character, is a blonde girl with freckles, wide emerald green eyes, and long, wavy hair worn in pigtails with bows. Candy Candy first appears in an April 1975 prose novel by acclaimed Japanese writer Kyoko Mizuki. When Mizuki collaborated with manga artist Yumiko Igarashi, the Japanese magazine Nakayoshi grew interested in Candy Candy. The series was carried as a manga series in the magazine for four years and received the first Kodansha Manga Award for shjo in 1977. Toei Animation turned the narrative into an anime series. There are also a number of Candy Candy films that were never distributed outside of Japan.
