The Baccano! light book series is a Japanese creation that was authored by Ryohgo Narita and illustrated by Katsumi Enami. The majority of the action takes place in a fictitious United States of America during a variety of different historical periods, the most prominent of which is the time period known as the Prohibition era. It concentrates on a number of unrelated characters, such as alchemists, thieves, thugs, Mafiosi, and Camorristi, among other types of criminals. The characters start running into each other in 1930s Manhattan when an immortality elixir is produced there, which sets off a chain of events that gets more and more out of hand as it progresses. Since the publication of the first novel in February 2003 by ASCII Media Works under the Dengeki Bunko banner, a total of twenty novels have been made available to the public as of March 2013. The novels were turned into a television anime series consisting of sixteen episodes. The series was directed by Takahiro Omori and produced by Brain's Base and Aniplex. The first thirteen episodes of the series were broadcast on WOWOW between July26, 2007 and November1,2007; the last three episodes were released directly to DVD. Additionally, an adventure video game for the Nintendo DS, two drama CDs, and a manga collected into two volumes were adapted from the series. An additional novel was made available alongside the initial drama CD, and two gaiden novels were made available in sections alongside the DVDs of the anime adaptation.
