Billy, an effeminate aficionado of old science fiction action thrillers, is the protagonist of the novel. Cameron is his lone friend, a nerdy cinema buff who does everything he can to improve his confidence. Billy withdraws into his thoughts after witnessing a UFO land, convinced that aliens are taking over the town. Cameron, like the rest of town, is doubtful. In the meantime, people are dying. To begin, Lester, the churchgoing husband of Carolyn, Percis's melancholy caretaker, discovers Percis mutilated. Soon after, a jogger and then a janitor at the Carbonics Warehouse perish under mysterious circumstances. While the Detective and his Chief attempt to solve the killings, a pair of news reporters share this knowledge with the public.
