Admiral Frank Beardsley has come back to New London to take command of the Coast Guard Academy, which will be his final assignment before most likely being promoted to command the Guard. He is a widower with eight kids, and he leads a caring but strict ship, complete with charts and salutes. The youngsters yearn for a place that is theirs permanently. A free spirit and a designer, Helen North is the mother of eleven children who live in a loving anarchy punctuated by periodic group hugs. When high school sweethearts Helen and Frank see each other again at their high school reunion, it's if they've never been apart. They wed right there and then. Then the difficulties begin when two groups of children, the unrestrained rebels and the well-behaved preppies, are forced to cohabit the same space. The conflicting factions come to an agreement to cooperate in order to dissolve the marriage.
