Following the death of her mother, Lisa Rayborn (Natasha Henstridge), a successful New York City fashion designer, returns to her hometown and family farm. Her brother Jim (Harry Hamlin) has transformed the family business from a cow farm to a sheep farm, against their father's (Lawrence Dane) concerns, as a result of a weakened economy. Lisa decides to stay on the farm in order to assist with the situation. The border collie, whom she names Lucky, is adopted from a local animal shelter and trained to be a sheepdog by her husband, who lives nearby. While Jim and Lisa are considering entering Lucky in a sheep herding competition, a strong rainstorm causes a forest fire, and Lucky is called upon to assist in the rescue of trapped children and the transport of them to a safe location. When Lucky gets burned while doing so, it appears that she will not be able to participate in the competition.
