Rheinhardt, a cynical drifter, gets a job as an announcer for New Orleans' right-wing radio station WUSA. Rheinhardt is content to broadcast WUSA's reactionary editorial stance, even if he disagrees with it. Rheinhardt's cynicism is challenged by a lady friend, Geraldine, and Rainey, a neighbor and troubled idealist who discovers WUSA's sinister, hidden purpose. When events spiral out of control, even Rheinhardt is forced to take a stand.
