In an effort to answer these issues, two researchers on the cutting edge of their field "give birth" to a Neanderthal, making him the first Neanderthal to walk the world in about 35,000 years. William's so-called parents are unsure of the best method to bring him up because he is both a "normal" child and a scientific experiment. As William approaches adulthood, he receives instruction on the universal human experiences of love and intimacy. However, the more he attempts to conform to human expectations, the more his basic urges begin to emerge, which ultimately results in disastrous repercussions for both him and the people he cares about the most.
