In the slums of Manhattan, New York's upper West Side, a group of Polish-American teens called the Jets compete with a rival group of Puerto Ricans who just moved there called the Sharks to "own" the streets. Tensions between the two gangs are high, but two kids, one from each gang, fall in love, which leads to a tragedy.
