Jussi Vares discovers two victims on the outskirts of Turku: a woman who was shot in the head and a man whose body is covered in runes identical to the slashes, implying that the murder was part of a macabre ritual. Vares is hired to investigate these homicides a year later. Varesta is led via cable wires to the underworld's most powerful unseen godfather, the sheriff, in Turku. We don't talk about the Sheriff since no one knows him. Vares comes perilously close to the "jury," the hidden underworld ruler clubs, where members of the human spirit are considered a cheap commodity. Vares gets too close to the truth when rummaging through the case.
