Farm girl Mattie Ross, who is just 14 years old, decides to hunt out the person who is responsible for the death of her father, a hired hand named Tom Chaney. To assist her, she employs the services of Reuben J. "Rooster" Cogburn, the most tenacious United States Marshal she is able to locate, a man with "real grit." Mattie is adamant about traveling with Cogburn, despite the fact that his drinking, laziness, and generally deviant character do not inspire her confidence in him. She goes against his wishes and travels with him as he makes his way through the Indian Nations in quest of Chaney. They are joined by Texas Ranger LaBoeuf, who is interested in Chaney for his own reasons and wants to capture him. On their voyage, the unusual trio encounter peril and adventure, and each member of the group has their "grit" put to the test.
