Tomas, a successful surgeon, departs Prague for an operation, meets Tereza, a young photographer, and brings her back with him. Tereza is shocked to discover that Tomas is already having an affair with the Czech woman Sabina, but when the Soviet invasion occurs, they all leave to Switzerland. Tereza, dissatisfied, departs to Czechoslovakia when Sabina begins an affair and Tom continues to pursue women. Tomas realizes his error and decides to pursue her.
