Tom Ripley is a young man who is intelligent and has the mindset that it is preferable to be a pretend somebody rather than a genuine nobody. Tom gets the chance to seize an opportunity when a wealthy shipbuilder from the United States asks him to travel to Italy and bring back his son Dickie, who is a playboy. Ripley insinuates himself into the seemingly perfect lives of Dickie and his fiancée, Dickie's best friend, and launches himself headfirst into an audacious plot involving deception, lies, and murder.
