After the Spanish Civil War, a traveling projectionist shows a print of James Whale's 1931 "Frankenstein" for the community, which traumatizes seven-year-old Ana. Scenes of the monster killing a child and then being killed by villagers have left the youngster deeply worried. She confronts her older sister about the meaning of life and death and accepts her explanation that the monster is still alive and residing in a neighboring barn. During the Spanish Civil War, Ana's world is turned upside down when she finds a fugitive Loyalist soldier hiding in the barn.
