In1858, Bernadette, a young peasant girl, sees "a beautiful lady" in the city dump in France. Neither she, nor the people in her town, say it is anything else. They think she's crazy, and they do everything they can to get rid of her and her followers. The church doesn't want to be involved in the whole thing either. In fact, as Bernadette gets bigger and bigger, everyone in the town starts to get a lot of attention, and the phenomenon changes their lives.
