Her inattentive parents are killed in an earthquake as she is growing up in India as a British citizen. She has been sent back to England to live with her uncle in his castle. Due to the death of his wife eleven years prior, her uncle has a strained relationship with her. After being abandoned yet again, she decides to explore the estate and comes across a garden that has been closed up and neglected. She begins renovating the garden with the help of one of the servants' sons and finds more secrets of the house.
