Greg Powell, a deranged ex-con, enlists the help of Jimmy Youngblood (Smith), a petty thief, as a crime partner. When two cops pull them over for tail lights, Powell becomes panicked. Powell plans to kidnap the cops, and Smith agrees to help him carry out his mad plan. They go to a secluded onion farm in Bakersfield, where one cop is slain and the other manages to flee. The ramifications are explored in the film.
