Nick Hart is a talented but impoverished American artist who makes his home in Paris during the 1920s alongside other foreign residents. He spends the majority of his time drinking and mingling with people at the area's cafés, as well as nagging the owner of the gallery, Libby Valentin, to buy his artwork. He finds himself embroiled in the scheme hatched by the wealthy art patroness Nathalie de Ville to fake three artworks. Because of this, Hart has multiple run-ins with an American rubber billionaire named Bertram Stone, who just so happens to be married to Rachel, Hart's ex-wife.
