The Man Who Laughs
As a kind of retaliation for the betrayal committed by Gwynplaine's father, Lord Clancharlie, the King had a permanent smile carved into the face of Gwynplaine's son, Gwynplaine. Gwynplaine is taken in by a wandering showman who raises her as his own child; she eventually becomes a famous idol. It doesn't take long for him to develop romantic feelings for Dea, who is blind. The monarch perishes, and the wicked jester of the king makes plans to destroy or corrupt Gwynplaine.
