The Magician
This movie by Ingmar Bergman, The Magician (Ansiktet), is a fun and clever story of deception from one of the best illusionists in movies. During the 1800s, Max von Sydow plays Dr. Vogler, a mesmerist and potion seller who travels the world. He is in Stockholm, where his magic is put to the test by the cruel, eminently rational royal medical adviser, Dr. Vergérus. The end result is a clever battle of wits that's both scary and funny, and it's shot in rich, gothic black and white that makes it look scary and beautiful.
