Dre Parker, who is 12 years old, could have been the most popular kid in Detroit, but he is now in China because of his mother's new job. Dre is instantly attracted to his classmate Mei Ying, but their different cultures make it impossible for them to be friends. Worse, Dre's feelings make him an enemy of Cheng, who is the class bully. Dre has no one to turn to but Mr. Han, the maintenance worker, who is a master of kung fu. As Han shows Dre that kung fu isn't about punches and blocks, but about being mature and calm, Dre realizes that fighting the bullies will be the hardest thing he's ever done.
