It is the middle of December, and SOS Brigade chief Haruhi Suzumiya announces that the Brigade will be holding a Christmas celebration in their clubroom, with Japanese hotpot for supper as a special treat for its members. Kyon, Yuki Nagato, Mikuru Asahina, and Itsuki Koizumi, members of the brigade, begin preparations for the party, including costumes and decorations. However, when Kyon returns to school a few of days later, he discovers that Haruhi has vanished. On top of all that, Mikuru asserts that she has never met Kyon before, Koizumi has gone AWOL, and Yuki has been relegated to being the only remaining member of the literary group. Neither the SOS Brigade nor Haruhi Suzumiya are known to have existed in any form. Except for Kyon, no one else at the school is familiar with her.
