At the beginning of World War II, Cmdr. Ericson is given the responsibility of escorting the HMS Compass Rose in a convoy among inexperienced commanders and men who have recently completed their training. The harsh winter seas make life difficult enough, but the soldiers also have to toughen themselves up for the ordeal of rescuing survivors of U-Boat raids while having very little ability to fight back. The skipper and his first officer form a strong friendship via their shared experiences of traumatic occurrences both at sea and on land.
