After his small kid dies due to the negligence of hospital medical staff, Harry Fertig (Kingsley) takes matters into his own hands and murders the culpable doctors. Fertig's case is handed to the slick attorney Roy Bleakie (Baldwin), who cares only about winning and is indifferent to the issues involved. Bleakie's defense of a decent man prompts him to rethink his own morality as he learns that his client want to enter a guilty plea.
