During a trip to the United States, a violinist in a provincial orchestra in Poland, whose husband is the director of the ensemble, makes contact with a world-famous symphony conductor. It has come to light that he once had feelings for the mother of the violinist. The conductor, who is a hypochondriac and somewhat unstable, goes back to Poland to take up leadership of the provincial orchestra. In addition to this, he makes an attempt to reignite an old love affair by using the violinist as a stand-in for her mother.
