Officer Atsuyuki Sassa was assigned the task of defusing a hostage crisis in the resort town of Karuizawa, Nagano, when radicals from Japan's Red Army kidnapped a woman in 1972. However, there were some difficulties with the assignment. As soon as she arrived in Nagano's mountainous region, Sassa had to contend with subzero winter cold, divergent opinions between the Tokyo Metropolitan Police and the Nagano Prefectural Police, and public opinion in order to gain entry to the lodge that was holding the solitary woman captive.
