The film was based on Frank O'Rourke's novel of the same name. Jim Douglas (Gregory Peck) is a rancher who has been hunting his wife's killers for six months. He rides towards Rio Arriba, where four men matching the description, Alfonso Parral (Lee Van Cleef), Bill Zachary (Stephen Boyd), Ed Taylor (Albert Salmi) and Lujan (Henry Silva), are in jail awaiting death. Jim is transported to Sheriff Eloy Sanchez's (Herbert Rudley) office to state his case. The village has never had an execution before, so they hired an outsider. The sheriff lets Jim view the inmates. They say they've never seen him, yet he looks like a hunter.
