The Birth of a Nation

In D.W. Griffith's controversial Civil War epic, the Stonemans, who are against slavery in the North, meet the Camerons, who own land in the South. When Confederate colonel Ben Cameron is captured in battle, nurse Elsie Stoneman asks for his freedom. Cameron starts the Ku Klux Klan in South Carolina during the Reconstruction period. He fights against Elsie's congressman father and Silas Lynch, an African-American man who worked for him.
