The inhabitants of a city without a name in the year XX have lost their voices. People communicate by spelling out words with their mouths. The only person who has retained the use of her voice is La Voz ("the voice"), a singer employed by Mr. TV, who covets La Voz. La Voz conceals her face by donning a hood over her head. Her son's name is Tomás, and he is an eyeless young boy with a voice (although this is kept a secret). Tomás befriends Ana after a letter addressed to him is mistakenly sent to her residence.
