The film chronicles a strike by industrial workers in pre-revolutionary Russia in 1903 and their subsequent suppression. The film is well known for a moment near the end in which footage of cattle being slaughtered is intercut with footage of the strike being put down violently, however there are several other instances in the film where animals are used as metaphors for various persons' plight. Another recurring subject in the film is collectivism vs individualism, which was regarded as a western film convention.
