The film is set in 1521 Antwerp, during the early years of the Reformation, in a Europe plagued by religious warfare. It relates the narrative of twelve-year-old Falko Voeten, the son of a printer. When Falko's father, Klaas Voeten, a printer of illegal literature, is apprehended by the Inquisition for publishing a letter written by Maarten Luther, Falko is unwittingly compelled to assist his father and track down the letter.
