The defiant Thracian Spartacus, who was born into slavery and trained as a slave, is eventually sold to the gladiator trainer Batiatus. Spartacus rebels against his masters and rallies the other slaves in an uprising after being forced to undergo weeks of brutal combat training for the arena. As the rebels make their way from one town to the next, the number of slaves who have managed to escape and join their cause continues to grow. They travel to southern Italy under Spartacus's command in order to reach the coast there, where they will sail across the sea and arrive back at their homes.
