In Manhattan, wannabe author Jabez Stone is a complete failure: he cannot sell his novels, he lives in a substandard flat, and he has no success with women. When one of his pals, Julius Jenson, sells his work to an editor for US$190,000.00, Jabez becomes jealous and pledges to give his soul to the devil in exchange for success, accidently killing a woman with his typing machine. The Devil knocks on his door, fixes the situation, and agrees to a deal with Jabez when he comes over. His low-quality writings receive negative reviews but become bestsellers; Jabez enriches himself; he is successful with ladies but lacks time for his buddies. Jabez meets with publisher Daniel Webster, who offers him an opportunity to break the devil's contract.
