Sayonara
Major Lloyd Gruver (Marlon Brando) is posted to a Japanese air base and encounters US racial prejudice toward the Japanese people. The problem is exacerbated by the fact that a number of the soldiers develop romantic relationships with Japanese women, in violation of US military policy. Normally a straight-laced officer, Gruver is forced to take a stand when one of his buddies, enlisted man Joe Kelly (Red Buttons), falls in love with and marries a Japanese woman, Katsumi (Miyoshi Umeki). By serving as best man during the wedding ceremony, Gruver jeopardizes his job.
