A circus caravan pulls up to the town where Albert the ringmaster's family lives on a gray morning. He hasn't seen them in three years, and he has a mistress named Anne, who is young and pretty. Albert calls his wife. Anne, who is jealous and wants to leave, goes to a theater group and lets an actor, Frans, seduce her in exchange for a necklace he says is valuable. Anne finds out that it's not worth anything around the same time that Albert's wife says he can't live with them. Albert and Anne are stuck with the circus and each other. There is a show tonight, Frans will be there smirking and being sarcastic, the bear is dirty, the clown is as mean as they come, and suicide is an option.
